Welcome to Significant Figures Rounding
In scientific measurements, proper rounding is crucial for maintaining accuracy and precision. This game will teach you the NCERT physics rules for rounding uncertain digits.
Rounding Rules Tutorial
Basic Rounding Rules
If digit to be dropped > 5:
Raise the preceding digit by 1
2.746
→
2.75
6 > 5, so 4 becomes 5
If digit to be dropped < 5:
Leave the preceding digit unchanged
2.743
→
2.74
3 < 5, so 4 stays unchanged
Special Rule for Exactly 5
If preceding digit is EVEN:
Simply drop the 5
2.745
→
2.74
4 is even, so drop 5
If preceding digit is ODD:
Raise the preceding digit by 1
2.735
→
2.74
3 is odd, so 3 becomes 4
Physics Applications
Cube Measurement Example
Problem: Each side of a cube measures 7.203 m
Surface Area:
6 × (7.203)² = 311.299254
→ 311.3 m²
Volume:
(7.203)³ = 373.714754
→ 373.7 m³
Question 1 of 15
Time: 120s
Round to 3 significant figures:
2.7456
Which rounding rule applies?
Quick Reference
Digit > 5: Round up
Digit < 5: Round down
Digit = 5, Even preceding: Drop 5
