Physics of Prism Refraction

When light passes through a prism, it undergoes refraction at both surfaces. The angle of minimum deviation (δm) occurs when the angle of incidence equals the angle of emergence.

μ = sin[(A + δm)/2] / sin(A/2)

Where:

  • μ = Refractive index of prism material relative to surrounding medium
  • A = Angle of the prism (apex angle)
  • δm = Angle of minimum deviation

Current status: 40.0° deviation
