Physics Explanation
This simulation demonstrates how particles with different masses but similar kinetic energies move at very different speeds. The electron (blue) moves much faster than the proton (red) despite having less kinetic energy (10 keV vs 100 keV) because its mass is much smaller.
The velocities are calculated using the kinetic energy formula: KE = ½mv² ⇒ v = √(2KE/m).
Key observations:
- Electron speed: ~5.93 × 107 m/s (10 keV)
- Proton speed: ~4.38 × 106 m/s (100 keV)
- Speed ratio: ~13.54 (electron is 13.54× faster)
